The Story

My contribution to 1Monash will be on the recent Monash Talent Night. The event was held on August 28 in search of Monash University’s brightest talent. The diversity of acts ranged from singers and dancers, to band performances. We even had a stand-up comedian who did a spectacular impersonation of the late Michael Jackson.

Why You Should Read It

My story is worthy as a news story as it was one of the biggest events held this semester. It was organized by the university committee itself, and the contestants were all students of Monash. The event was also a sold-out success, managing to sell all 350 seats in Auditorium 2.

What Is To Be Expected

My story will be in a third-person narrative. The story will start off a week in advance during the first rehearsal. In doing so, readers will catch glimpses of how the event came to be and the work put into preparation for the night. I believe this is a superior way of engaging the intended audience, by allowing them to “see” into the story. As I was also a finalist in the competition, the “narrator” will be covering my preparation towards the event. The night itself will be covered in detail, with behind-the-scenes reporting, and of course, coverage of the talent acts.

Who’s In It

I have since found two interviewees not known beforehand. The first is David Hwi, who helped with the production behind curtains and has so graciously agreed to be interviewed through e-mail. The second is the winning act, Freakee Boogiez, whom I think will definitely capture the readers’ interest. I am also thinking of interviewing the first-runner up, Gajen Nad, whose impersonation of Michael Jackson drove the crowd wild. I will definitely try my best to interview these people face-to-face (and spectators for vox populi).

What Else?

My first documented source will be the Monash University website. The Talent Night was largely publicized on the website and therefore, will serve as one of my sources. I will also utilize Facebook as the other documented source because the event was also largely publicized on this social-networking site through invites. I will be incorporating visual aids into my story to satisfy readers’ curiosity, especially those who could not attend.
